Dr. James Driscoll

August 2, 2018 By Gayle Davies

We mourned the passing of FSOMS member James Driscoll of Naples, FL. James was a graduate of St. John’s University and Georgetown University Dental School and served as an Officer in the U.S. Navy. An Oral Surgeon extraordinaire, he had offices in Manhasset and Great Neck, New York, before moving to Ft. Lauderdale, where he practiced for 26 years.

He then retired to Naples to play golf as much as possible. James (Jimmy to his many friends) was a true gentleman, who never said an unkind word about anyone. He is survived by his wife, Roberta; daughters, Julie and Carrie; brothers, Jack, Richard, and Joseph; and extended family and friends. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Avow Hospice of Naples, or your favorite charity.

About our Speaker:

Joshua D. Lenchus, DO, RPh, FACP, SFHM holds a pharmacy degree from the University of Florida, and graduated from Nova Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2000. Having completed a rotating internship (aka transitional year) at Broward General Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale, he pursued training in internal medicine at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami. He currently works as a hospitalist at Jackson Memorial Hospital for the University Of Miami Miller School Of Medicine. There he holds the rank of associate professor of medicine, anesthesiology, and radiology. For the last nine years, he served as an associate program director for the internal medicine residency.

He has extensive hospital administrative and committee involvement and, in 2012, was elected the first osteopathic President of the Jackson Health System medical staff and chairman of its medical executive committee, in its then-94 year history. He was subsequently re-elected in June 2014.

One of Dr. Lenchus’s special areas of interest is patient safety. His dedication earned him the position of associate director of the UM-JMH Center for Patient Safety. Aside from creating a crisis management simulation course, in 2007 he developed a novel curriculum centered about simulation-based invasive bedside procedural instruction. Now in its ninth year, the program has transformed the way procedures are taught and performed, decreasing complications thereby leading to safer patient care. He has spoken locally, regionally, and nationally regarding this initiative and is recognized as an expert in the field; he has conducted numerous workshops at various conferences, garnered more than $2million in grant funding, and his team’s work has been published in peer-reviewed journals. He has been honored with multiple teaching awards in his short tenure, and most recently, accepted the BAYADA Award for Technological Innovation in Health Care Practice from Drexel University’s College of Nursing and Health Professions for this work.

Outside the hospital, Dr. Lenchus is incredibly involved, serving as a leader in multiple county, state and national medical associations, including the Florida Osteopathic Medical Association, Florida Medical Association, the American College of Physicians, and the Society of Hospital Medicine. He has a passion for health policy, serves on public policy committees, and has presented this topic in a variety of venues, from student groups to corporations.

He is a recent recipient of the Soref Jewish Community Center’s Humanitarian of the Year, Broward College’s Alumni of Distinction award, Florida Osteopathic Medical Association’s Physician of the Year, and was a faculty inductee into Alpha Omega Alpha honor medical society.
