FSOMS Lebowitz Award Winner Announced

HamrickOn May 5th, the FSOMS presented The Martin Lebowitz award to Dr. Clayton M. Hamrick, an award presented to the dental student showing academic excellence, character, and a high aspiration for becoming an oral and maxillofacial surgeon.

Clayton and his two older siblings, Chris, 32, and Kate, 30, were all born in Pensacola, FL. The family moved to Chapel Hill, NC, when he was 2 weeks old and at age 2, they moved to Raleigh, NC, where his father, a 1979 graduate of the U of Florida Dental School, practices periodontics. Clayton attended the Ravenscroft School in Raleigh from 6th-12th grade.

Playing sports was the thing he enjoyed most, and he played football and lacrosse in middle and high school. He went on to play lacrosse at Clemson University in South Carolina, where he attended college and graduated Cum Laude with a BS and Biological Sciences degree in 2006. Clayton's dream sports vacation would be for the Clemson's football team to make it to the national championship so he could join his college buddies to proudly cheer on their alma mater!

Growing up the son of a periodontist, Clayton was always around dentistry and was fascinated with the profession from youth. His father was a huge influence on him, especially as they went on mission trips together. It was this paternal guidance and the experiences of these mission trips that ultimately solidified his interest in pursuing dentistry and later, OMS as his desired career paths. While it was a hard conversation to have with his father as he finally decided that OMS, rather than periodontics, was his specialty of choice -- his dad has been very supportive of him in his final career choice.

Clayton received his DMD degree this month. He had performed externships at the U of F, Jacksonville Medical Center, the U of NC School of Dentistry and the U of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio. His research included a periodontal rat model study of "Porphyromonas gingivalis and Trepomena denticola mixed microbial infection, 2008, presented at the IADR meeting, Miami FL, May 31 - June 3, 2011, and a project focused on fluoride's effect on bone biology, using a mouse model, at the U of NC School of Dentistry in the fall of 2007.

Clayton's Community Service includes Medical/Dental Mission Trips to the Dominican Republic in 2005, 2010 and 2011, a First Presbyterian Church Medical/Dental Mission trip to Bolivia in 2008 as well as his work with "WE CARE" Dental Clinic, Gainesville, FL in 2010 & 2011. Clayton is a member of the American Student Dental Association, Psi Omega Dental Fraternity and UFCD Oral Surgery Interest Group. His interests outside of Dentistry include; working out, playing intramural football, going to college football games, wakeboarding, snowboarding, traveling and spending time at the beach with his family.

You appear to be one very well rounded young man, Clayton, and we of the Florida Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons congratulate you on your academic excellence, personal character and family devotion. We wish you well with your Oral Surgical education and hope to see much of you in our professional organizations in the years to come. It was our great pleasure to award you the prestigious 2012, Lebowitz Award!

Lawrence K. Cook, (FSOMS Awards Chairman)
